COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Way’s Cole County Community Organizations Active in Disaster is hosting the Cole County Ready Festival today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lincoln University’s Jason Gym to promote emergency preparedness, with partners including the Cole County Office of Emergency Management + American Red Cross offering resource booths, local emergency response trucks, safety vehicles and food trucks.  ABC 17

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three people suffered moderate injuries when a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and a 2020 Chevrolet Sonic collided on West Truman Boulevard and South Country Club Drive at 11:48 a.m.—the 29-year-old man and the 29-year-old woman with her 6-year-old daughter were taken to University Hospital while police diverted traffic for 30 minutes.  KRCG-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Amy Murray from Iberia, accused of fatally poisoning her husband with antifreeze and burning their home, entered an Alford plea and will serve 12 years in prison—prosecutors said she was a nurse at JC-CC at the time.  KWOS

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Jefferson City drone company said its light show is a quieter—more respectful alternative to fireworks for people with sensory issues on July 4, as it lets creators design shapes and sync colors to music. Meanwhile, Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Department will host its annual fireworks display at Stephens Lake Park, showing that traditional fireworks remain popular.  Jefferson City News Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cole County school districts are struggling as assessed property values have barely grown over the past decade—limiting their biggest funding source while costs continue to rise.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Kehoe signed SB 348 to rename the Grand Glaize Bridge to Police Officer Phylicia Carson Memorial Bridge in honor of the Osage Beach officer who died in a high-speed chase on August 31, and the Department of Transportation will pay for the renaming.  KRCG-TV
  • The Capital City could lose nearly $300,000 a year if proposed federal budget cuts remove funds from a housing grant program that helps low- and moderate-income households fix or buy homes—city leaders say the loss would affect many local families.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • At the start of the 20th century, automobiles began to cause speeding problems in Jefferson City; a 1904 report indicated that the City Council considered ordinances (designed to slow down speeding drivers) to address the issue.  Jefferson City News Tribune
