GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State emergency teams began to check damage from Friday night tornadoes and storms that hit 25 counties and caused 11 deaths by Saturday morning — 19 tornadoes struck many areas. Gov. Mike Kehoe declared a state emergency — local teams are working with first responders to help and gather more information in the coming days. KRCG-TV
- ➤ On Saturday, March 15, about 60 people gathered at the Missouri River Regional Library gallery to discuss how the coalition can protect Missouri’s ballot initiative process — leaders like Rod Chapel Jr. and Rep. Michael Burton voiced their support while organizers planned to collect signatures starting in May for a constitutional amendment ahead of the November 2026 election. - ➤ Jefferson City officials and GPP LLC plan a not-for-profit conference center project on East Capitol Ave that will replace the old News Tribune site with a hotel, conference center and parking garage using a public non-profit model to lower borrowing costs. The redesigned project calls for 204 hotel rooms and 29,000 square feet of meeting space and aims to fill a $40 million funding gap through tax increment financing and other local revenue sources—keeping the site in public control.
