Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 17th of March.
Good morning, Jefferson City.
State emergency teams began to check damage from Friday night tornadoes and storms that hit 25 counties and caused 11 deaths by Saturday morning — 19 tornadoes struck many areas.
Gov. Mike Kehoe declared a state emergency — local teams are working with first responders to help and gather more information in the coming days.
On Saturday, March 15, about 60 people gathered at the Missouri River Regional Library gallery to discuss how the coalition can protect Missouri’s ballot initiative process — leaders like Rod Chapel Jr. and Rep. Michael Burton voiced their support while organizers planned to collect signatures starting in May for a constitutional amendment ahead of the November 2026 election. This effort aims to stop lawmakers from interfering with passed proposals.
Jefferson City officials and GPP LLC plan a not-for-profit conference center project on East Capitol Ave that will replace the old News Tribune site with a hotel, conference center and parking garage using a public non-profit model to lower borrowing costs.
The redesigned project calls for 204 hotel rooms and 29,000 square feet of meeting space and aims to fill a $40 million funding gap through tax increment financing and other local revenue sources—keeping the site in public control.
