COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On December 1, the season's first snow highlighted the growing need for shelter as Room at the Inn and other centers saw nearly full capacity nights, while daytime warming centers like the Missouri River Regional Library provided refuge for those without homes.   • Missouri American Water will tear down the historic standpipe water tower built in the 1890s and an old filtration building near its facility — demolition is expected to last about a week with Brooks Street from West Main to West High closed until Christmas Eve.  ABC 17
  • Today, Jefferson City's Toys for Tots is preparing to serve 250 families this Christmas season — expanding its outreach to nearby counties. Donations are still needed at the Samuel F. Gearhart detachment of the Marine Corps League at 4925 Bus 50 W, ensuring toys and books reach children in need.  KRCG-TV
  • A historic water tower (over 100 years old) built in 1890 is set for demolition with Missouri American Water planning to finish the work by Christmas Eve. Brooks Street will be partially closed between West Main and West High near the Missouri River Bridge.  KWOS
  • Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri hosts the One for One Holiday Food and Fund Drive on Dec. 17 at Columbia Mall and Buchheit in Jefferson City from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sponsors 939 the Eagle and Zimmer Radio back the drive + aim to ease food insecurity.  KWOS
  • Sunrise Countdown to Christmas features a gallery of local Christmas tree photos from the Chime+In page as we are 12 weekdays from the holiday classic. Locals shared festive spirit to celebrate Mid Missouri traditions.  KRCG-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jefferson City Cantorum (a 45-member group) will play Christmas music at the Miller Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Dec. 13. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m.  KRCG-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A state education official is running for a seat on the local school board and is promising fresh ideas to improve district policies. His campaign seeks to boost community input as the election draws near.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Erika Leonard resigned as board president effective December 1 to focus on work and family, and the board is reviewing her letter today to address the vacancy. She was elected in 2022 with a term ending in 2028 and three board seats are up for election in April.  ABC 17

SPORTS NEWS

  • Six Mid-Missouri football teams received votes in final Missouri Media Rankings released Monday night. Blair Oaks led Class 2 with a flawless season following a 59-0 state title win in St. Joseph, while Tipton earned its first state championship in Class 1 with a 39-14 victory over Putnam County.  Jefferson City News Tribune
