COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Workers at Binder Park are setting up the Capital City Festival of Lights, a two-mile display organized by Homemaker Health Care and JC Parks to raise funds for a Community Outreach Program (which provides walkers and wheelchairs). The festival will open to the public on December 6th with hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., a fee of $20 per vehicle, and it is closed on Mondays.  KRCG-TV
  • Four mid-Missouri law enforcement agencies will compete on November 22 in the first annual Battle of the Badges toy drive at Jefferson City Walmart — 724 W. Stadium Blvd., where officers will collect new, unwrapped toys for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The agency that collects the most toys will earn the trophy and bragging rights.  KRCG-TV
  • Leaders from Missouri Main Street Connection and Downtown Jefferson City Inc. held a town hall at Venue 324 on Wednesday night to discuss a two-year, $44,110 community empowerment grant to revitalize downtown. The meeting gathered ideas for economic development and preservation efforts + set plans for training and volunteer work to guide future projects.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • Panda Express is coming to Jefferson City to take over the former Steak 'n Shake site—its restaurant is tentatively scheduled to open in summer pending construction delays.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Public Service Commission will rule next summer on the Grain Belt Express project that would run 30 miles through parts of Callaway — Montgomery counties, as many Mid-Missouri farmers oppose the plan because it would supply power to out-of-state customers.  KWOS
  • Governor Mike Kehoe and First Lady Claudia Kehoe delivered 100 Thanksgiving meals to families in the Jefferson City School District on Thursday — the start of their Mansion on a Mission program. The governor’s office thanked local partners for donations and said the initiative will expand to help more Missouri communities soon.  KRCG-TV
  • Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe visited Latham Elementary School on Wednesday to tour the Farmstead and speak with students about farming — he said agriculture teaches you more about life than any other industry.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced Tuesday that her office will launch an investigation into the Missouri State High School Activities Association after not contacting the group before the public announcement—MSHSAA representatives were not reached for comment.  Jefferson City News Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Volunteers in our region joined No-Shave November to help remind men to get regular checkups as part of a campaign by MU Health Care. Doctors explained that avoiding shaving helps highlight the importance of early screening for cancers—such as prostate and testicular cancer.  KRCG-TV
