- ➤ The Jefferson City Salvation Army is asking for non-perishable food donations to restock its pantry after a rise in assistance requests due to the SNAP benefits cutoff, and donations can be dropped off at 927 Jefferson. KWOS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln University’s College of Agriculture, Environmental and Human Sciences began its fall Research Seminar series on Sept. 30 with sessions on plant pathology and renewable energy and held a session on Oct. 23, while future sessions are scheduled for Nov. 4, Nov. 18, and Dec. 2 — the seminars are hosted in Allen Hall and streamed via Zoom with refreshments provided for faculty, staff, students and guests. - ➤ In March 1926, construction crews worked 10-hour days and finished building Jefferson City Junior College three months ahead of schedule. The Central Missourian reported that students enjoyed a tested pool and an auditorium with seating for 1500 — a design highlighted by excellent acoustics and a large stage. - ➤ Teachers and volunteers at East Elementary School hosted nearly 300 trick-or-treaters on Friday—children dressed in costumes with candy bags—to celebrate an early Halloween event. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ Jacqueline Jones Ragland, who served as Miss Lincoln University from 1969 to 1970, recalled how campus queens Sharon Ann Allnut Williams and Ida Ballard Simon influenced the university during a time of civil rights and unrest. She also congratulated the newly elected queen and king, Yessnia Austin Dixon and Jesse Canamore, who will lead for 2025 to 2026—continuing a longstanding tradition at Lincoln University. - ➤ Lincoln University President John Moseley announced an African American museum will be built on campus to honor the school’s rich heritage—this project will boost the educational and cultural opportunities available to students and the local community. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ Lincoln University and the Missouri Organic Association held the first Busby Field Day on Oct. 18 at the Alan T. Busby Farm—rain reduced turnout from the 70 expected as researchers and local organic farmers discussed natural methods to guide future events. - ➤ Mid-Missouri Head Start programs remain secure even as a federal shutdown has put 140 national programs at risk. Executive Director Darin Preis said his program, which serves eleven counties, will stay open as long as the shutdown does not extend through April (grant period begins May 1). KRCG-TV

- ➤ The Missouri Division of Fire Safety invites volunteer fire departments with budgets under $50,000 to apply for a $15,000 equipment grant aimed at upgrading essential firefighting gear—313 of 827 qualify—while the project runs from December 15 to May 15. Applications are submitted online to access a total of $1.4 million in state funding. KRCG-TV
- ➤ Jefferson City residents can resume burning yard waste today until March 1 as allowed by the Fire Department—fires must be attended at all times, have means to be extinguished, and be out by sunset. Residents can also drop off their yard waste at 708 Ellis Boulevard to avoid any fines. KRCG-TV

- ➤ The Missouri Department of Conservation warned the public to avoid touching dead or sick birds after tests confirmed bird flu in geese, ducks, and raptors—MDC said hunters should dispose of carcasses properly and people must report sick birds to help stop the virus from spreading. KRCG-TV
