COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food pantries in Missouri are bracing for a cut in federal food aid after SNAP benefits were stopped on Oct 20th due to a deadlock in Congress—families now worry about having enough food for the month. Pantries in areas like St. Louis and Pulaski County are extending hours and adding distribution days to handle record numbers of clients.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • On Tuesday morning, Jefferson City Parks Department and the Missouri Department of Conservation hosted the 'Runge In Your Backyard' event at McClung Park—where volunteers taught local kids about native animals and let young Julian Reuter pet a Texas brown tarantula and a speckled kingsnake. The event aimed to show that these creatures are harmless and help everyone learn about Missouri's natural wildlife—encouraging more visits to the Runge Conservation Nature Center.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Caterpillar celebrated its Centennial Milestone at its Boonville plant Tuesday, Oct. 28, by donating $5,000 to the Cooper County food bank to support local needs, and the company continues to fund Missouri organizations through ongoing contributions.   • Construction on the new Olive Garden in Jefferson City will start this fall at the former St. Mary’s Hospital site below the Courtyard by Marriott on Missouri Boulevard. City administrator Brian Crane said residents have discussed a new restaurant for decades, and the project is now moving forward.  KWOS

  • Bishop-elect Ralph O'Donnell was welcomed with harp, violins— and organ music during Solemn Vespers at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City on Monday, October 27th, held on the eve of his ordination.  Jefferson City News Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Monday night at Missouri River Regional Library, two local experts explained that insurance rates are rising because of climate change and more extreme weather. They said that more claims for homes and cars show a national trend and urged people to check their insurance—local risks are growing.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • A new book called Seasons of the Journey: The Biography of Dr. James Frank is now available at the Lincoln Bookstore and tells the story of a leader who broke many barriers in college sports and education. It was written by his wife, Zelma Frank, and shows how his work changed schools and sports across the nation.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • Lincoln University of Missouri held a hands-on Beef Cattle Artificial Insemination School at its Alan T. Busby Farm to teach modern cattle breeding techniques and proper insemination methods.   • Elementary students and their guardians are invited to the Colonial Day Celebration sponsored by the Cole County America 250 Commission at American Legion Post 5 Hall, 1423 Tanner Bridge Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday — the event offers games, crafts and exhibits that bring the American Revolution to life.  Jefferson City News Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study from the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance shows that most health care firms plan to raise rates next year when people visit the doctor—Anthem Blue Cross will see about a 22% increase, United Health Care about 15%, and Cox Health as much as 30%.  KWOS
