COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anastasia Jones of Henley was crowned Miss Midwest Jr. Teen at the Miss Midwest Pageant on Oct. 12—held at the Liberty Performing Arts Center.  Jefferson City News Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The free application for federal student aid opened early on September 24—amid the government shutdown—and officials say a new 15-minute form will make applying easier. State and university aid offices will host a FAFSA Frenzy event on October 30 at 6 p.m. at Westram High School, urging students to apply by February 2 for the Access Missouri grant—providing one-on-one help.  KRCG-TV
  • Lincoln University marks 40 years since Dwight T. Reed Stadium was named in 1985 while the Blue Tiger community prepares for its 100th Homecoming from October 26 through November 1 — a milestone that highlights decades of athletic tradition. The stadium was built in 1971, renovated in 2017, and will host the Homecoming Football Game versus Truman State on November 1 at 2:00 p.m.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • LU alumnus Dennis Strobel ’74 has established the Cecil Blue Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor his late professor Cecil Blue—an influential English teacher at LU for nearly five decades. His gift includes an IRA valued at about $180,000 that will transfer to the university upon his passing along with yearly contributions of about $6,400 to support annual scholarships starting in 2025.  Lincoln University of Missouri

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cole County uses its Environmental Protection and Safety Code to eliminate public health hazards and nuisances in unincorporated areas—residents can call or visit the Health Department or complete an online form to report potential violations. Once a complaint is received, officials work to educate the property owner and may hold a hearing if voluntary compliance is not reached.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Missouri Department of Social Services said Monday that SNAP benefits for next month will not be issued because of the federal shutdown. Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri expects more families to seek extra food assistance as some may use their (October balance) while officials said funds will resume once available (Jess Bax).  KRCG-TV
  • Higgins Asphalt is milling and repaving parts of downtown this week—temporary closures may affect intersections on Jefferson and Broadway.  Jefferson City News Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mizzou rallied in double overtime against Auburn to win 23 to 17 and move up to number 15 in the AP college football poll. The Tigers will face Vanderbilt this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. + ESPN’s College Gameday will broadcast live from Nashville from 9 to 11 a.m.  KWOS
