COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jefferson City will celebrate its 200th birthday with a free, four-day event planned for next week. Festivities begin at 5 p.m.—everyone is invited to join the celebration.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • On Tuesday, workers removed scaffolding from the Fountain of the Arts and began transferring it to the Fountain of the Sciences — the next stage in the South Capitol Fountains restoration project, which has nearly reached its halfway mark.  Jefferson City News Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 1,400 students explored a range of trades yesterday at the Build My Future event held at the Jefferson City Jaycees Cole County Fairgrounds — local employers showcased careers in construction, welding, auto repair, heavy equipment operations, and carpentry.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Lincoln University has hired Kylie Hoover as the new coordinator of Access and Ability Services—she will help students receive accommodations for disabilities, hearing or visual impairments, and other needs.   • A local JCHS graduate received a national award for service to his community and participation in speech and debate. The honor recognizes his hard work and skill in public speaking.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Jefferson City High School students in Foods 1 and 2 classes, led by teachers Sonya Forck and Mindy Moss, are making and sharing about 250 healthy chicken fried rice meals for the community this week as part of the Kids Feeding Kids program—giving them hands-on food service learning.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • A Missouri Department of Conservation Assistant Natural History Biologist, Amanda Gehin, spotted a whitebanded crab spider eating a Monarch butterfly and later found a rare ghostly white Monarch butterfly—highlighting nature’s unusual cycle.  KRCG-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 68 (the new law) that will require students to take part in active shooter drills beginning in the 2026-2027 school year while school staff already practiced these drills last year. The law also makes schools build emergency plans and enforces a cellphone ban during school hours that began with the 2025-2026 school year.  ABC 17

  • Helias Lady Crusaders beat Jefferson City Lady Jays 23 to 25, 25 to 15, 25 to 22 and 25 to 9 at Rackers Fieldhouse on Tuesday night to clinch the CMAC volleyball championship—snapping a three-match losing streak—after dropping the first set.  Jefferson City News Tribune
