COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital will celebrate 120 years on Saturday, October 18, starting with a mass at 8 a.m. at the chapel, followed by a reunion for current and former staff at 9 a.m., a heritage ceremony with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m.—and family-friendly activities in the outpatient parking lot until 1 p.m.  KRCG-TV
  • The Jefferson City Police Department's Community Resource Unit helped nearly 900 people since it began in 2023—responding to mental health crisis calls, including those from unhoused residents, as community resource officer Martika Hitt explained at Tuesday's Lunch and Learn at First Baptist Church.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • On Tuesday, the Schulte family turned over its grocery business to Balls Food Stores — John Schulte and office manager Kathy Moad had managed Schulte's Fresh Foods until the handoff. John Schulte will stay on for a few months to help with the transition.  Jefferson City News Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two state archaeologists—Michael Ohnersorgen and Justin Bensley—led an impromptu tour of the half-mile trail at Norton State Historic Site on Tuesday, Oct. 14. They explained that visitors saw Native American burial mounds east of Jefferson City and gained historical insight.  Jefferson City News Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local businesses near the Madison Street Parking Garage fear that its demolition will block customer access, which could hurt revenue for shops such as Bones Restaurant and Lounge. The city will decide on road closures after awarding a demolition bid at the City Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 3 with bids due by 2 p.m.  ABC 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln U broke its enrollment record with 2256 students — 42% of them new, marking the best numbers in over 30 years. Freshmen had a 64% retention rate and the average GPA is now just over 3.00.  KWOS
  • State Technical College of Missouri set another enrollment record, marking a rise in student registrations at the college.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • On Tuesday evening, Parks Director Aaron Grefrath and his team showed Washington Park's facilities and shared potential expansion plans—efforts that will improve park features in the near future.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance has put a hold on canceling home insurance for houses damaged by this year's spring storms—giving homeowners more time to fix their homes. The bulletin said companies must let policyholders repair their homes before any policy is canceled.  Jefferson City News Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Judith Mutamba from Lincoln University explained that pumpkins offer more than seasonal appeal as every part of the plant—leaves, flowers, and fruits—is rich in vitamins and minerals and can help boost food security. She advised growers to harvest only a few tender leaves per vine to ensure the plant continues producing nutritious parts.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • The American Red Cross is seeking donors for a blood drive on Friday — account manager Katie Bailey said donations are needed to prevent a blood shortage along Elm, McCarty and Dunklin streets.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Jefferson City firefighters are selling pink T-shirts this October to raise awareness for breast cancer and to support local community members battling the disease. James Noah — President of Jefferson City Firefighters Union Local 671 — said the campaign now invites community participation to boost its impact.  KRCG-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Austin Weaver, a senior quarterback for Helias, posted 308 yards with five touchdown passes in the first half during Friday’s win over Jefferson City. Coach Chris Hentges said Weaver leads the offense + his season totals stand at 1,224 passing yards and 15 touchdowns.  KWOS
