  • For the month of October, Menards at 810 Stonecreek Drive is serving as a dropoff site for non-perishable food items for the Mid MO Samaritan Center food pantry—helping families in several local counties. Donors can drop off their own items or buy non-perishables from the grocery department during regular store hours until Oct 31.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • On Oct. 9, 2025, about 250 community members gathered at Capital Bluffs Event Center to honor CASA volunteers who gave a voice to abused and neglected children in Cole County courts — the fundraiser celebrated their service and highlighted the role of advocacy in supporting local children.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • A decade-long effort brings true crime to the stage at Scene One Theatre this month. 'The Drowning Girls' uses dramatic reenactments to tell the story of three young brides murdered by their husband—an event inspired by the historic Brides in the Bath murders—offering a unique theatrical experience.  Jefferson City News Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln University's aquaculture team is nearing the end of a 12-week study on soy-based feed alternatives for rainbow trout—graduate student Sadiat Onileowo and Dr. Moureen Matuha are testing different blends to replace fishmeal and support Missouri soybean farmers. The team will begin a new study with older fish after this project ends in three weeks.  Lincoln University of Missouri

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials say that more than $1B is needed to keep schools and Medicaid running at current levels as revenue fluctuates and lawmakers face a tight budget ahead — officials warn that the funding gap comes as federal health aid ends and tax changes cut revenue further.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Cole County began work on stormwater improvements on Scruggs Station Road and Scherr Drive on Tuesday—planning to add a pavement overlay later.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • State Sen. Mike Bernskoetter announced Thursday his candidacy for Cole County presiding commissioner. He said his proven record of conservative leadership—built on his years in government—will guide his campaign.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Jefferson City council approved the 2026 budget — allocating $86 million for public safety and city staff salaries. The funds will support the police and fire departments in the coming year.  KWOS
  • The Missouri Supreme Court refused Bayer’s Sept. 30 appeal of a $600 million judgment that ruled Roundup causes cancer—this decision means Bayer may consider further appeals and could stop making Roundup if legal pressures persist. Attorney Matthew Clement said no other appeals remain aside from a rare chance at a U.S. Supreme Court review.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Local officials and the contracted firm held a public meeting Thursday night to study safety improvements on Business Loop 70 for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycle riders—after most fatal injuries along the loop occurred to people outside of cars.  ABC 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • Missouri DHSS reported 16 West Nile virus infections with 15 hospitalizations and 3 deaths, and health officials urge residents at risk to use repellent + wear long sleeves to prevent more cases. Officials noted the surge is higher than in past years and stressed taking precautions to reduce further spread.  KRCG-TV
