BUSINESS NEWS

  • After 67 years of business, Schulte’s Fresh Foods was sold to Kansas City-based Balls Food Stores—set to take over Tuesday, Oct. 14—marking the end of second-generation ownership.  Jefferson City News Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is taking steps to protect deer as chronic wasting disease spreads by requiring testing during opening weekends and changing carcass rules to curb disease spread— officials held a webinar and will host open houses and accept public comments until Oct. 17.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Office of Broadband Development is hosting its 4th annual Connecting all Missourians Broadband Stakeholder Summit on Oct. 23 where leaders from the Department of Economic Development and the private sector will discuss the BEAD program—advancing broadband access statewide.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Missouri filed a waiver application with USDA that would bar SNAP recipients from buying candy, soda and ready-to-eat desserts while still allowing the purchase of fresh produce (the waiver is set to take effect in October pending USDA approval). Gov. Mike Kehoe’s executive order encourages programs for healthier food choices, though critics warn that these changes may confuse retailers and limit options for consumers.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • The Jefferson City Council voted Monday to close most of the Madison Street garage and adopt a new budget—plans that will change how city facilities are managed in the coming months.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • A new memorial marker honoring Missouri veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan will be installed at the Missouri Veterans Memorial on the river side of the State Capitol—this marker also recognizes service dating back to the Mexican War.  KWOS
  • On Monday night, the Jefferson City Council approved the Master Development Agreement for a new Downtown Conference Center and Parking Garage despite two members raising concerns about long-term costs— the council also approved closing the Madison Street Parking Garage, leaving about 150 spaces available.  KRCG-TV

  • KWOS named Blair Oaks safety Warren Davis Athlete of the Week after he intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble in a 52-10 win over Blue Valley Southwest Friday night. He leads his team with five interceptions this season—his coach praised his smart play as the Falcons prepare to host the Eldon Mustangs Friday.  KWOS
