  • The Capital Area Rail Terminal on North Shamrock Road is open and offers inbound and outbound transloading services to the public—operated by Capital Oil Terminals on land owned by Cole County.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Blacksmith Distillery, the only distillery in Cole County, will hold its grand opening at its new building at 11517 Branch Road in Lohman on Oct. 18. The event will include a ribbon-cutting, guided tours, and gin and bourbon tastings from noon—7 p.m.  Jefferson City News Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Off the Cuff Improv announced its next Halloween themed performance and encouraged audience members to wear costumes—this invitation aims to boost the show's festive spirit.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Book/shop, etc. will be open Sunday through Oct. 11 with extended hours—featuring an interactive art exhibit, a story hour and a silent book club to celebrate Banned Books Week and support free access to ideas.   • Leadership will change next year for the LU-MRRL lecture series – Christine Elisabeth Boston, who has led the program for six years, will be replaced by a new organizer.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Lincoln University will mark its 100th Homecoming from October 26 to November 1 — a week of parades, coronations and tailgate parties — as alumni join students to celebrate a century of tradition.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • Lincoln University’s LUCE Specialty Crops and Native Plants Program hosted its first Ferntastic Fair today at the Finca Eco-Farm—where guests learned to propagate native ferns, sampled plant-based dishes, and explored fern-inspired art. Botanist Justin Thomas and Chef Robert Rusan answered questions as the event highlighted the many ways native ferns thrive in local gardens and creative spaces.  Lincoln University of Missouri

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joe Steelman launched his campaign for state senate today at Prairie Base near Rolla with more than 300 supporters and said his business experience will help tackle rising living costs in Jefferson City — he is one of four candidates seeking the SD16 seat as incumbent Justin Brown is term limited. His campaign was introduced by his mother, former state treasurer Sarah Steelman.  The Missouri Times
  • Today, the Missouri National Guard is activated for ICE duty as Governor Kehoe deploys 15 support guardsmen—administrative and clerical soldiers to assist ICE with office tasks statewide.  KWOS
  • On Wednesday, Oct. 1, traffic slowed on Highway 54 and Highway 63 near the Jefferson City exit as cameras recorded bumper-to-bumper conditions on the Missouri River Bridge—drivers were urged to travel cautiously while no cause was reported.  KRCG-TV
  • After two months of debate, the administration committee voted 3-2 on Wednesday to advance a $90,000 housing strategy contract to the full council. Council members remain divided on its purpose.  Jefferson City News Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Capitol dome is shining pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Missouri — it was lit at sunrise today and will remain pink until sunrise Thursday.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Missouri autism doctors say more research is needed on claims about leucovorin for autism after recent White House remarks—experts note that while some children have shown improved speech, the drug is not a cure and more studies must be done. Parents are advised to talk with their doctors when considering treatments.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • On Tuesday night the Helias Lady Crusaders defeated the Rock Bridge Bruins in a four-set volleyball match at Rackers Fieldhouse — winning a crucial third set that changed the game, with scores of 21–25, 25–13, 28–26, and 25–16.  Jefferson City News Tribune
