COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans took the final trip on the Central Missouri Honor Flight on Monday, ending a 16-year program that provided more than 5,500 veterans a ride from Columbia to Washington to see war memorials—backed by volunteers, motorcycle escorts, and community donations. The last flight carried 74 Vietnam veterans and one Korean veteran.  KRCG-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Cole R-5 School District in Eugene are entering updated buildings for the new school year—summer projects have improved classrooms and play areas. The improvements provide better spaces for learning and play.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • A Jefferson City veterans group awarded a scholarship to Ella Lewis at Lincoln University to help her earn a nursing degree, and the award was presented by the group 40 — 8 Capitol City Voiture 1292 which honors American soldiers from World War I.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jefferson City has struggled with a housing shortage since a 2019 tornado destroyed 150 low-income units—making it hard for many residents to find affordable homes. City leaders launched a new incentive program that offers developers $5,000 per unit—an effort supported by a July groundbreaking at Stronghold Landing that will add 40 rental units in the next 18 months.  KRCG-TV
  • MoDOT's Focus on Bridges program won the regional level and is now advancing to the national stage to compete for the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award—public voting is open until Nov. 17 while winners will be announced in late November.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • County department leaders met with the Cole County Commission on Tuesday to discuss a new salary study that raised concerns among public safety agencies. Department heads received questionnaires from Condrey and Associates— a Georgia-based consulting firm hired to study job classification and pay.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • State Rep. Jeremy Dean from Springfield faced a Missouri House ethics investigation after he sent an obscene text message to GOP Rep. Cecelie Williams on Sept. 4 during debate over a bill to change the amendment process—House Minority Leader Ashley Aune removed him from committee assignments. Dean apologized amid reports of death threats and cited safety concerns as the House Ethics Committee began confidential inquiries on Sept. 10.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • City officials said traffic concerns at the Rainbow Drive/Country Club Drive intersection, raised by neighbors near a proposed subdivision, are on local and state transportation lists for future improvements—officials plan to address the issues soon.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • Today, one lane in the 1900 block of Southridge Drive in Jefferson City will be closed to repair a sewer line—city crews will carry out the work as part of routine maintenance.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • The Missouri State Capitol Commission is exploring new technology to improve accessibility at the state capitol as it plans renovations on the century-old building.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • Southern Boone High School's south goal post was damaged in a Monday storm and will be replaced by Friday—allowing the school to host its first home varsity football game on time.  Jefferson City News Tribune
