CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested 33-year-old Aaron Mosley and 38-year-old Christopher Knox on Thursday after a search warrant at an Elm Street apartment in Jefferson City discovered three small bags of methamphetamine totaling 88 grams — white Oxycodone pills and a scale with drug residue were also found — and a loaded handgun on Knox.  ABC 17

  • Ferdinand Helias—who carried crucifixes and candlesticks in his saddlebags while traveling to say mass—helped form a rich Catholic tradition in Jefferson City and neighboring villages, and his artifacts are now preserved at St—Peter’s Catholic church to honor his legacy.  Jefferson City News Tribune

  • At South Elementary, students and teachers joined Yatvik Turlapati's family on Friday to honor the 9-year-old for his joyful, kind nature and boundless curiosity—memorial attendees shared memories of his lasting impact.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Jefferson City will face delays ahead of Labor Day weekend as work zones remain on U.S. Highway 54 during a pause from noon Friday until Tuesday—work on the bridge over the Moreau River Drainage is set to finish in October while police patrol the roads from 6 p.m. Friday through Monday, September 1. The Missouri Department of Transportation and State Highway Patrol stress that drivers should use caution in these areas.  ABC 17
  • Former JCCC Warden Doris Falkenrath filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Missouri Department of Corrections on August 27, alleging unfair treatment based on race, disability, sex, age, and hostile work conditions—she claimed the treatment led to worsening prison safety and staffing issues.  KRCG-TV
  • Sam Gibson, Cole County’s deputy chief of emergency management and support services, worked Friday at the EMS station — stepping into a new leadership role that uses a community approach to shape emergency management.   • On Friday (August 29th), the Capitol Commission heard final Master Plan presentations for renovations at the Missouri State Capitol, a building over 100 years old that shows signs of overcrowding. Lawmakers have been moved to mezzanines as plans are made to address the building's deficiencies.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Governor Mike Kehoe has called a special session of the General Assembly for noon Wednesday to redraw congressional districts and reform the initiative petition process to better reflect Missouri values. His Missouri First Map proposal would move Cole County to District 5 while critics say it favors conservative interests — a move that has sparked a heated debate.  Jefferson City News Tribune
