  • Therapy Paws will host two fundraising events to support children facing trauma and stress and to provide therapy dogs that comfort youth during hospital visits and court appearances—details of the events will soon be announced. CRIME NEWS

  • A Jefferson City man was arrested on August 28 at 12:18 p.m. after Cole County officers used a search warrant at his Elm Street home where they found 88 grams of methamphetamine in three baggies, a digital scale, four oxycodone pills, and a Glock 20 & eight rounds; he is now held without bond on a 2nd Degree Trafficking Drugs charge.  KRCG-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Church Basement Ladies: A Second Helping! will open on Sept. 4 at Capital City Productions on Wicker Lane, where the five beloved characters deliver new songs and jokes while facing modern challenges in a story set in 1969-70. The show runs Sept. 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. and Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m.—tickets cost $29 for a show-only option and $49 for a dinner-and-show package.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri repeals its capital gains tax today, exempting profits from stocks, real estate, and cryptocurrency sales while estimating a $625M revenue loss—state officials say new guidelines will arrive soon. The law also stops sales tax on diapers and feminine hygiene products—officials note that the change will affect future tax filings.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • The Jefferson City Council approved a new property tax rate of $0.5539 during a special meeting on Thursday, following a county rate increase. The change is expected to bring in about $40,000 more in revenue as all eight members voted in favor.  ABC 17
  • The Missouri Department of Conservation reminds hunters to get ready for dove season, which will begin on Sept. 1 and end on Nov. 29 — hunters need the proper permits and must use non-toxic shot in designated areas.  KRCG-TV
