EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Blair Oaks school district welcomed students back to class on Monday as several new classrooms opened as part of an expansion project. Superintendent Ben Meldrum said the district will finish the weight room and Ag building in December (voters approved a $9 million bond last year). KRCG-TV
- ➤ On Monday morning, the Jefferson City School District started the 2025-26 school year as students learned about a new statewide cellphone policy (banning use during class, lunch breaks, study halls, and between classes). The rule requires phones be turned off (or left on silent) and stored in backpacks or lockers. ABC 17
- ➤ Prisoners at the Jefferson City Correctional Center donated $4,000 in school supplies to East, Fatima, Lawson, and Linn Elementary Schools on Friday — the donation included backpacks filled with essentials and snacks with staff support. KRCG-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ This fall, Jefferson City Transit is offering free bus rides on Tripper routes from high schools to the JeffTran Transfer Station — the program is open to all students without needing an ID and runs Monday through Friday after school. Transit Manager Gerry Stegeman said the service could save families up to $27 a month per student and its future will be reviewed next year. ABC 17

- ➤ A crew from Bar W Excavation, Inc. began demolishing the former Truman Hotel at 1510 Jefferson Street today (the building once operated as a Ramada Inn and hosted dinner theater events) to clear the way for a new Hilton hotel. The owners announced the abandoned hotel will be replaced as part of a redevelopment plan. Jefferson City News Tribune
