CRIME NEWS

  • Two Columbia men were charged after a ten-minute police chase through Jefferson City streets on Thursday—officials said the silver Hyundai evaded capture by driving dangerously until it got stuck on a curb and both men tried to flee.  KRCG-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson City students will return to school Monday without phones because a new state law bans their use except for educational purposes. The updated policy restricts phone use in hallways (and cafeterias) with penalties ranging from warnings to confiscation for repeat offenses.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City staff are drafting a dark sky ordinance and a sustainability plan after the Public Works and Planning Committee voted on Thursday to update outdoor lighting rules—Ward 5 Councilwoman Mackenzie Job presented her proposal to use warmer lights and help the city secure federal funds.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • On Friday, city leaders at the 'Let's Talk Housing' event told residents that efforts to add more housing are underway; Mayor Fitzwater and staff explained that removing zoning obstacles and launching a Housing Incentive Program—offering $5,000 per new unit—will bring 112 new homes from six developers. They said more housing is needed to grow the local economy and keep people close to major jobs.  KRCG-TV

  • The Missouri Gaming Commission awarded Missouri’s two available direct mobile sports wagering licenses — one to DK Crown Holdings Inc and one to Circa Hospitality Group I LLC. They will finalize their licenses by submitting applications by September 12 so that sports betting can begin on December 1.  KRCG-TV
