CRIME NEWS

  • Cole County's Prosecutor said he will not charge Jefferson City officers after a March incident at a Gordon Street home in which a woman died when she fired a shot and officers returned fire—an autopsy later showed she killed herself.  KWOS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Capital City Productions is staging Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical! where first-time director Brandon McElwain is in awe as his imaginative vision comes alive on a 70-foot mainstage—dynamic dancers and soaring music enhance the performance.  Jefferson City News Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Jefferson City School District opened its new Early Childhood Center at 1840 E. McCarty St. yesterday, doubling its capacity from 150 to 300 students out of about 600 early childhood graduates each year. The $22.5 million project was funded with a bond issue approved by 68% of voters in April 2024 — part of an overall $85 million borrowing for district facilities.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey sent a letter on Monday to U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi urging the DOJ to act immediately against illegal offshore gambling operators—highlighting concerns over the growing influence of foreign gambling on state laws.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • The north side of West Capitol Avenue in Jefferson City will be closed next week for resurfacing and painting. Work will start at 7 a.m. Monday and finish by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 (near the Missouri Capitol) as drivers are urged to avoid the area.  ABC 17
  • Jefferson City councilmen delayed nearly $100,000 in funding for a housing study and did not approve a $90,000 consultant contract to examine the shortage of low-income homes. A previous study linked the housing crisis to the loss of over 100 homes in the 2019 tornado while the council backs a 140-unit workforce housing project on Wildwood Drive (aimed at expanding affordable housing).  KWOS
