COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Jefferson City trash truck driver helped resident Annissa Maness on Tuesday, August 5 by moving her full trash cans to the curb for pickup after noticing they were misplaced, and she later thanked him on Facebook for his kindness. Security footage shows the driver (appearing on video) leave and return with both cans to ensure they were picked up.  KRCG-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson City School District welcomed 100 new teachers at a Rotary Club luncheon — Superintendent Bryan McGraw said the event helped build staff unity as the new teachers finished orientation before classes begin Monday, August 18.  KRCG-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cole County Board of Equalization is working to meet an Aug. 23 deadline after a State Tax Commission order required a 5% increase in property assessments + current assessments show only 67.53% of market value. The board will meet at 1 p.m. + officials will decide how to adjust the tax values.  ABC 17
  • After a July investigation led to animal abuse charges against four people on July 24, the Jefferson City Animal Shelter will get a $7,000 ASPCA grant to help pay for animal care and the Cole County Commission approved a $20,400 fix for the old jail radio system—both moves aiming to support animal care and staff communication.  ABC 17
  • The Missouri Veterans Commission is getting an almost $8-million check from recreational marijuana sales and will share a $23-million sum with the Department of Health and Senior Services and the Public Defenders Office.  KWOS
  • Jefferson City Parks has added eight new AEDs to park facilities with help from the fire department (bringing the total to 20 devices) to aid bystanders during a cardiac arrest until EMS arrives. This update enhances emergency support in local parks and pavilions.  KRCG-TV
