CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jefferson City man Fredy Navichoc-Putzul, 24, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault on Wednesday — receiving a 15-year prison sentence with credit for time served after he stabbed a victim on March 4. ABC 17
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Eight inmates at Jefferson City Correctional Center earned their high school diplomas after passing the High School Equivalency Test on Tuesday. Family members and staff gathered to celebrate the achievement as one graduate earned a 96 (the highest score in 13 years). KRCG-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed the American Beer Act early this month — reducing the excise tax on all American-made beer to 2 cents per gallon and providing tax relief for breweries like Last Flight in Jefferson City. The law, which also expands alcohol service hours during the FIFA World Cup, takes effect on Aug. 28. ABC 17
- ➤ The Missouri Supreme Court ruled against tax stacking on recreational marijuana sales by affirming that only one local sales tax may be imposed—upholding the constitutional amendment approved by Missouri voters. The decision, reached by a six-to-one vote, means pot shops will no longer combine additional taxes and should save consumers about $3 million in extra costs each month. KRCG-TV
- ➤ The DOE canceled a $4.9 billion taxpayer-funded loan guarantee for the Grain Belt Express project (saying the project had issues and ending its plan for a high-voltage line linking Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana) and Missouri officials (Senator Josh Hawley and Attorney General Andrew Bailey) praised the decision. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Lake Regional Health System joined Mayo Clinic Care Network on Wednesday, giving its doctors and nurses access to Mayo Clinic experts for treatment plans. The partnership will improve patient care without extra cost while making Lake Regional the only hospital in Mid-Missouri in the network. KRCG-TV
