COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army will spend about $6 million to double the bed count at the Shelter of Hope in Jefferson City and add more rooms for families and a new food pantry; the project is backed by a $100,000 United Way grant and will open next year.  KWOS

CRIME NEWS

  • Jessica Taylor faces assault charges after she allegedly attacked a man with a steak knife—she threatened to kill herself and tore up a house during the incident.  KWOS
  • Callaway County prosecutors charged Holts Summit man Joseph Hughes (24) with felony counts of First Degree Burglary, two counts of Stealing Firearm, and two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm as well as misdemeanor counts of Second Degree Property Damage and Stealing after a manhunt on Saturday, and he was held without bond (in Callaway County Jail).  KRCG-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that local governments cannot stack marijuana sales taxes in incorporated areas with an existing local tax—this decision came after a lawsuit in St. Louis County where both the City of Florissant and the county imposed 3% taxes, affecting areas like Boone that charge multiple taxes.  ABC 17
  • The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that counties cannot add a 3% sales tax on recreational marijuana sales in incorporated areas, ending a tax stacking practice that cost consumers +$3 million each month. Industry leaders and local officials say the decision will require local governments to adjust their tax rules.  The Missouri Times
  • The Jefferson City Council approved a $1.9 million contract with Stockman Construction Corporation to extend Chestnut Street from near Capitol Avenue to a cul-de-sac south of the railroad tracks. Half the project cost will be reimbursed by the state (per meeting documents) and the extension will serve the State Health Laboratory and River Market with access for upcoming development.  ABC 17
