COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Way of Central Missouri is giving a $100,000 grant to The Salvation Army to expand the Center of Hope Shelter in Jefferson City, with the funds set to be awarded during a meeting at noon Tuesday. The expansion — which is part of a $6.5 million capital campaign and will add private family rooms with bathrooms, trauma-informed spaces for children and a client-choice food pantry — will begin construction later this year and finish by the end of 2026.  ABC 17
  • The Jefferson City Salvation Army Center of Hope will expand its shelter from 31 to 62 beds and add private family rooms with bathrooms and trauma-informed spaces for children—helped by a $100,000 donation from United Way. Work will begin late this year and finish by the end of 2026 while the shelter stays open, and United Way will present the donation on Tuesday, July 22 at 12 p.m.  KRCG-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A Jefferson City woman allegedly threatened to stab her father with a steak knife at their Fillmore Street home around 4:40 a.m. Thursday—she was arrested and now faces charges of first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action while being held without bond.  Jefferson City News Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recycling materials from Columbia are being brought to Jefferson City after an April tornado destroyed that city's recycling center — officials said that funding for drop off sites will pay a private contractor for the move.  KWOS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners said Tuesday that smaller governing bodies are more restricted by the Sunshine Law than larger ones because Missouri statute requires that a quorum hold meetings open to the public and press—limiting their ability to discuss business in private.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Multiple law enforcement agencies in Mid-Missouri conducted active shooter exercises last week to sharpen their response skills. Miller County Sheriff’s Office held training at Eldon High School on July 14 and 15, Columbia Police conducted SWAT training at Mill Creek Elementary on July 16, and Jefferson City Police practiced at a local school on July 17 — all using blanks and fake guns for realistic drills.  KRCG-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A contract dispute between MU Health Care and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield threatened the coverage of over 90,000 people until both sides reached a deal last Tuesday—state leaders and negotiations pushed the agreement after the contract expired on April 1.  The Missouri Times
