CRIME NEWS

  • Jesse Lynn Hollandworth from Linn pleaded guilty to a DWI charge after he hit a pedestrian on Route 179 on May 1 and was sentenced to two years probation, 75 hours community service, a substance abuse program, a victim’s impact panel, a $750 fine and court costs— the pedestrian was taken to University Hospital in stable condition.  KRCG-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Missouri River Regional Library and a local workforce group will host a job fair next Thursday—job seekers can meet employers and learn about available local opportunities.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Kehoe signed a law to ban child marriage and child sex-abuse nondisclosure agreements in Missouri, and the rule will start next month—he signed 13 bills during a private ceremony in his Capitol office.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • A Missouri House interim committee announced informational hearings on property tax reform to gather input from citizens and local officials. The sessions are scheduled for July 16th at 11 a.m. in Jefferson City, Aug. 27th at 5:30 p.m. in Macon, and Sept. 3rd at 11 a.m. in Jefferson City — lawmakers expect the feedback to guide fair, transparent and sustainable tax policies.  ABC 17
  • Senate President Pro Tem Cindy O’Laughlin (R-Shelbina) urged MU Health Care and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to renew their contract by Thursday, noting Anthem’s new proposal doubled its rate increase offer and kept policy exceptions in place so patients could see their doctors. MU Health Care, with 1,200 providers, 80 clinics and seven hospitals, had been out of Anthem’s network since April 1, affecting about 90,000 people.  KWOS

SPORTS NEWS

  • More than 500 racers competed in the MR340 canoe race on Wednesday as they pushed through the intense Mid-Missouri heat. Supporters at Cooper’s Landing in Columbia and the Jefferson City river front helped racers by providing water and supplies—volunteers aided each checkpoint during the four-day event.  KRCG-TV
  • The Missouri River 340 race entered its second day when the Jefferson City Carl R. Noren Access checkpoint opened Wednesday morning for hundreds of racers paddling from Kansas City along a 340-mile course to St. Charles (checkpoint number four along the race). Some racers paddled through the night and skipped checkpoints in hopes of finishing by Wednesday evening while the finish line remained open until 9 p.m. Friday.  ABC 17
