COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Cole County Ready Festival will take place Saturday, June 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jason Gym on the Lincoln University campus—featuring vendor booths, a bounce house and emergency vehicle tours as the Cole County COAD partners with the American Red Cross and the United Way to help families learn disaster preparedness. - ➤ El Poblano Mexican restaurant in Jefferson City is giving out free buckets of ice to outdoor workers battling the summer heat. Manager Fabian Rodriguez said workers can stop by every morning at 9:30 to get ice with no purchase required. KRCG-TV
- ➤ On June 24, Jefferson City's Room at the Inn held a press conference to ask for community help finding a long-term home for its shelter. The organization, which had reached capacity this winter and used temporary venues, is seeking a downtown property to serve both overnight and day shelter needs — a step to better assist those in need. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A Jefferson City mother said her 4-year-old daughter got burns after sliding on a hot metal slide at Community Park during her Juneteenth day off — she was treated at urgent care. JC Parks has closed the slide until the metal cools down — and they are checking with the manufacturer to find a fix. KRCG-TV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Inmate Jerry Thebeau, 66, died at a local hospital on June 22nd at 2:51 a.m. while serving a 30-year sentence for second-degree robbery, armed criminal action and resisting arrest—an autopsy will determine his cause of death. KRCG-TV
- ➤ In February 2025, prisoner Gary Owen Miller, 50, at Jefferson City Correctional Center allegedly stabbed a Correctional Officer with a 37-inch sharpened piece of metal when the officer opened his food port—officials say he now faces multiple charges including Possession of a Weapon at a Correctional Center and First-Degree Assault Causing Serious Physical Injury.
