ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Missouri State Parks warned residents that harmful algae blooms are rising due to warmer summer weather and pollution and that water on lakes and rivers showing green slime (foam or scum) should be avoided. They added that the blooms can release toxins that cause irritation and urged residents to report any suspected blooms to the DNR.  KRCG-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Missouri House passed Senate Bill 3 with a 90-58 vote to offer financial incentives for stadium projects that require investments of at least $500 million and over 30,000 seats, sending the bill to Gov. Kehoe’s desk. The chamber also passed Senate Bills 1 and 4 to fund the Missouri Research Reactor + expedite emergency housing aid for those impacted by the St. Louis tornado.  ABC 17
  • Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 81 on Tuesday that expands fingerprint-based background checks for license applicants and updates fireworks rules— the law also extends first responder death benefits and other key safety programs and will take effect Aug. 28.  ABC 17
  • Jefferson City officials are looking at adding a use tax on online purchases — sales tax revenue was nearly $10,000 short in April and over $140,000 below target for the year — and may bring the idea to a ballot if a local group steps up. Mayor Ron Fitzwater said the measure is not meant to raise local taxes but to level the playing field for local businesses.  KRCG-TV
