COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Capital Garden Club dedicated its new interactive sensory garden at Memorial Park in Jefferson City on Tuesday. The garden features basil, sage, thyme, lamb's ear, and scented geranium plants in large planter pots near the playground (funded by a grant from the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri and local donors) so visitors can touch and smell the plants. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jefferson City police arrested 21-year-old Danaun C. Washington on six felony counts including domestic assault after a 911 call reported he hit a woman and tried to pistol-whip her — officers used an armored vehicle and long guns to secure his Olive Street home, found him in the attic, and he is now held without bond in Cole County Jail. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The State Board of Education is reviewing a plan to permanently close several schools for disabled students, including Delmar Cobble School in Columbia that was closed in February because of staffing shortages. Students now attend classes in Marshall and Jefferson City, and final decisions on closure dates and real estate are pending—cost savings could reach nearly $13 million in deferred maintenance plus $1 million annually. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Mike Kehoe expanded the special session topics after speaking with lawmakers on Tuesday. His revised call includes 14 measures—ranging from tax credits for disaster-related expenses to emergency disaster relief and affordable housing aid—that lawmakers will consider in the upcoming session. - ➤ Cole County is merging its Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Management Agency to fill the Emergency Management Director role and save money for the county. Chief Eric Hoy will now serve as administrator for both agencies—other key staff will receive raises and the new setup will be tested for one year. KRCG-TV
- ➤ Gov. Mike Kehoe amended the call for this summer’s special session to include disaster relief, tax policy, and additional budget appropriations—proposals that include a tax credit of up to $5,000 per homestead for disaster deductibles—and funding for enhanced housing trust and property tax relief for uninhabitable residences. Lawmakers will review these proposals—expected to address funding gaps in disaster response—and decide on next steps later this summer. ABC 17
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ MU Health Care announced that a new Mizzou Pharmacy will open Monday, June 9th at the Family Medicine Clinic at 1500 Southwest Boulevard in Jefferson City — staff from Capital Region Medical Center will move to the new site. The pharmacy will offer a drive-through window, immunizations, medication synchronization and free prescription delivery. KRCG-TV
