COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The 2025 Kidfest will take place at Ellis-Porter Riverside Park in Jefferson City on May 31 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). The free event offers games, hands-on activities and entertainment with vendor concessions (including food and drinks). KRCG-TV
- ➤ The Homelessness Task Force met last week to review food pantries, shelters, and other assistance as informal camps have increased in Jefferson City. The group said they want to speak with homeless individuals (those who have used these services) to help shape future support. KWOS
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ At the Jefferson City Correctional Center, inmate James Henderson—already serving life without parole for murder—allegedly attacked a prison worker by punching and stabbing him with a homemade knife and now faces multiple felony charges for assault and armed criminal action. KRCG-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Mike Kehoe called a special session in Jefferson City for lawmakers to address disaster relief — economic incentives for the Chiefs and Royals and a failed budget bill. Lawmakers will convene at noon on Monday, June 2 to provide needed aid and support economic growth statewide. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ Governor Mike Kehoe held a 10:00 a.m. press conference Tuesday in Jefferson City to announce a special legislative session aimed at keeping the Chiefs and Royals in the state with plans for stadium remodeling and a potential new baseball stadium. He said the initiative involves between $2.5 and $3 billion in economic development — Kansas lawmakers have also tried to attract the teams. KWOS
- ➤ Cole County Public Works announced that the 3400 block of Frog Hollow Road between Rock Ridge Road and the water tower was closed for roundabout construction starting Tuesday, May 27 and will remain shut throughout the summer as part of the Wildwood Drive Extension Project (approved May 19). - ➤ Gov. Mike Kehoe announced a special session set to begin at noon on June 2 to discuss legislation offering financial incentives for stadium projects—designed to keep the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals in Missouri—and to fund capital projects like the NextGen MU Research Reactor and disaster aid for families affected by recent severe storms. - ➤ On Monday night, the Blair Oaks girls soccer team won the Class 1 District 1 Tournament championship by defeating the Bishop DuBourg Lady Cavaliers 2–1 at the Falcon Athletic Complex — their first postseason win in team history.
