CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Jefferson City man was charged on May 16 with second degree assault after he allegedly hit a man with a shovel at a homeless camp along Wears Creek on Missouri Boulevard—he is now held without bond at Cole County Jail. KRCG-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A memorial service Tuesday at the Capitol honored former governor and U.S. Senator Christopher 'Kit' Bond, whose body will lie in state for 24 hours after he died May 13. The north and south circle drive around the Capitol remain closed until 1 p.m. today and a highway patrol will escort his body back to St. Louis at noon—flags stay at half-staff until sunset on Thursday. - ➤ Lawmaker Melanie Stinnett said she is ready to return to Jefferson City in June — she noted much was left undone in the last session. Governor Kehoe has scheduled a special session to address tax incentives to keep the Chiefs and Royals from moving to Kansas — Stinnett also announced her candidacy for the 30th District Senate seat. - ➤ Traffic on Stadium Boulevard near Adkins Stadium will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday between Jackson Street and Mesa Avenue for the state track meet, according to the Jefferson City Police Department—motorists should follow police instructions as many pedestrians are expected in the area. - ➤ Cole County EMS held its first EMT training class at 8 a.m. on May 17th at the new department headquarters — students, including Norah Larsen, practiced proper patient lifts as part of the new program. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ Christopher 'Kit' Bond, Missouri's youngest governor and longtime U.S. senator, was honored at a memorial service in Jefferson City on May 20—his body lies in state today for public viewing after his death in St. Louis last week. KRCG-TV
- ➤ Cole County planned a new Juvenile Attention Center on St. Mary’s Blvd to replace the smaller center on Stadium Blvd — about $4 million of the $14-million project funding did not move forward when a state measure stalled at the Capitol. County leaders must now seek additional funds to keep the project on track — discussions are underway. KWOS
