- ➤ Jeremie McClaim faced domestic assault charges after he followed his girlfriend into a restroom at Hy Vee in Jefferson City Saturday where shoppers intervened during the incident. KWOS
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ MODOT has reduced part of Highway 54 to two lanes for bridge repair work until October and urged drivers heading to the Lake of the Ozarks to take alternate routes—local business owners worry that fewer visitors will lower sales. KRCG-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe’s plan to cover up to half the cost for a new Royals stadium and a refurbished Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs was killed by the Senate on Tuesday night—lawmakers said the process was rushed and lacked public notice. The proposal was added as an amendment to a student-athletes’ bill and faced strong bipartisan opposition with only days left before the legislature adjourned. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ Members of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce were optimistic Wednesday that city leaders would soon address the decaying Truman Hotel owned by the Puri Group after a February deal was rejected. Mayor Ron Fitzwater said he expects the group to fund its demolition before new investments in Columbia are made — and officials expect a public-private partnership to be proposed as the issue is raised again. - ➤ Funding remained uncertain for a new juvenile center in Cole County after the Missouri legislature did not pass House Bill 19 on Wednesday—plans for a facility at 2204 St. Mary's Blvd with eight detention cells and a half-court basketball gym were jeopardized—raising concerns over the current center's safety and overcrowding issues. - ➤ On Tuesday, the Missouri Supreme Court heard arguments on whether cities and counties can stack a 3 percent marijuana sales tax on dispensaries—a legal fight that began in 2023 and now affects over 70 areas statewide—and the decision will determine if dual taxation is constitutional.
