EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jefferson City High School graduated over 380 students on May 8th + marking a milestone for its 151st class, with many graduates headed to college + including Howard University, the University of Michigan, Loyola University and the University of Buffalo. Jefferson City News Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge ruled a year ago that Missouri illegally denied food aid to eligible residents, yet the Department of Social Services has not fixed the long call wait times and high denial rates for SNAP interviews. The order requires new benchmarks—like limiting wait times to 20 minutes for 90% of calls and capping interview denials at 20%—with substantial progress expected within six months. - ➤ The Missouri Senate passed a bill overturning local protections for Section 8 renters with a vote of 23—10 and sent it to the governor on Wednesday. It passed in the House 103—37 and will go into effect on Aug. 28 if signed. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ On Wednesday, Ward 2 Councilman Mike Lester (who proposed changes to candidate filing procedures) brought a motion that the mayor opposed during the administration committee meeting. The council debated the modifications as it reviewed filing procedures for municipal offices. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ Missouri lawmakers increased public school funding by adding $300 million — fully funding the schools — and agreed to adjust the childcare subsidy program during Wednesday's budget negotiations. They resolved differences on eight of thirteen state spending bills and will vote on additional measures today. Jefferson City News Tribune
- ➤ Seventy-nine people from more than 30 countries were sworn in as American citizens yesterday at Miller Performing Arts Center + the ceremony granted them new rights and responsibilities. Jefferson City News Tribune
