CRIME NEWS

  • James Elsea, 62, who was accused of shooting two Pettis County deputies on Friday (one was hit above the knee and the other near the calf) appeared Tuesday in court in Jefferson City and is charged in federal court with being a felon with a gun (he is held at Cole County Jail).  ABC 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three researchers from LU’s Dickinson Research Center went to San Diego in March to present their work at the 2025 Spring American Chemical Society Meeting—discussing parasite control in livestock, the effects of agricultural nanoparticles on soil microbes, and PFAS chemical absorption in plants while gaining feedback from more than 10,000 peers.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • On Monday evening, the Missouri House passed a higher education bill with many amendments on a 94-36 vote that now moves to the Senate where lawmakers will decide whether to send it to the governor or form a conference committee—provisions include a non-binding definition of antisemitism, in-state tuition for active-duty military, and changes for K-12 schools. The bill covers both college and school issues as the session nears its end.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Monday night's Jefferson City Council meeting, the council approved a contract with Engineering Surveys and Services to design two new roundabouts at the intersections of West Stadium Boulevard and Creek Trail Drive. The design work will take about one year plus work is planned to start in 2028 to address growing traffic and safety concerns from new local developments.  KRCG-TV
  • On Tuesday, May 6, the Missouri Department of Revenue debuted its first mobile office at the State Capitol, offering full licensing services from a self-contained trailer with internet, cameras, and a generator. Officials said the trailer will help communities during emergencies and is expected to operate at the State Fair in August.  KRCG-TV
  • On Tuesday, the Missouri Senate held a third reading of House Bill 1175 that updates the Second Amendment Preservation Act to meet federal court rules while stopping local officials from enforcing some federal gun laws. Law enforcement leaders have opposed the measure, and the bill now awaits a majority vote before it is sent to Gov. Mike Kehoe—if approved.  ABC 17
