COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Denim Day, Jefferson City advocates wore denim to support survivors of sexual violence and raise awareness with a poetry slam, vigil & take back the night walk at Lincoln University. Angela Hirsch of Rape & Abuse Crisis Service and Raylene Duckworth of Rise Up Foundation said the events showed survivors they are not alone.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Electric cooperatives in rural Missouri deployed linemen to restore power after severe storms with tornadoes, hail and flash flooding, and many crews worked through these challenges. Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives chief executive officer Caleb Jones (a former state representative) praised the teams for using mutual aid to help neighbors get electricity back as quickly as possible.  KWOS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 1, a pedestrian was seriously injured when he was struck by a 2005 Nissan Altima traveling south on Highway 179—Jefferson City Police reported that the suspected drunk driver from Linn was unhurt and the victim is in stable condition at University Hospital.  KRCG-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln University of Missouri honored its faculty at a special awards luncheon on April 22 (held at 11 a.m. in the Scruggs University Center Ballroom) where outstanding teachers and long-serving retirees were recognized. President John Moseley and Provost Stevie Lawrence II spoke to show their support (and a guest speaker shared ideas on mentoring and STEM fields) for the college's commitment to excellent teaching.  Lincoln University of Missouri

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri Senate lawmakers approved 13 budget bills Tuesday that set nearly $49.5 billion for state programs with almost $300 million added for public schools and $107 million for child care changes. The bills now return to the House where a conference committee will work out differences on education, state employee pay + earmarks.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Troop F of the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cole County is hosting a behind-the-scenes Community Alliance Program on May 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its headquarters on N. Shamrock Road — the event includes demonstrations on criminal investigations, bomb squad equipment, and emergency vehicle operations, with 30 seats available pending a criminal background check.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • The ramp from westbound U.S. 54 to eastbound Missouri 94 was closed today for emergency repairs after a washout and is expected to reopen this afternoon—weather permitting.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • The Midwest March for Life will take place at the Capitol Thursday morning at 8 a.m. with a prayer walk and rally amid ongoing legal debates over Amendment 3. A Senate committee approved a ballot measure to let voters decide whether to overturn the amendment—which established reproductive health care as a constitutional right—while the full House backed House Joint Resolution 73.  ABC 17
