BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business leaders celebrated the Capital Area Rail Terminal’s ribbon cutting yesterday in Jefferson City—this new facility now provides in-bound and out-bound rail services for companies to import and export materials. Local officials said the project will create more job opportunities and boost the community’s economic balance.  KRCG-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln University’s Dr. Gary Hill, vice president of campus culture & chief of police, is featured in Roadtrip Nation’s documentary series Rethinking Higher Ed. The two-episode special will be released on May 1 and follows three young travelers as they explore accessible postsecondary pathways while highlighting Hill’s journey to success.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • Lincoln University of Missouri will celebrate the Class of 2025 commencement on May 10 at its Robert and Charlene Mitchell Auditorium in Richardson Fine Arts Center (710 E. Dunklin St.) on campus. Dr. Harold L. Martin Sr. will speak, and ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. for select departments with later events for nursing and agriculture.  Lincoln University of Missouri

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Senate will return to session at 10 a.m. Tuesday to debate a revised state education budget that adds $300 million for public schools over the governor's proposal—legislators must approve all spending bills by May 9.  ABC 17
  • A sweeping Missouri child welfare bill that will ban child marriage and stop the state from taking foster children’s Social Security benefits is headed to the governor’s desk after a 32 to 1 Senate vote Tuesday. The bill also voids secrecy agreements in abuse cases and will assign client-directed attorneys to foster children beginning in 2028—steps lawmakers will refine in future sessions.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Lawmakers at the Missouri State Capitol debated tax cuts Monday as the House moved closer to the Senate on a bill that would eliminate capital gains taxes for upper-income earners and raise the income ceiling for the circuit breaker tax credit—despite not including the sales tax exemption for diapers and feminine hygiene products found in the Senate measure. Additional legislative issues remain as members face a tight schedule before adjourning.  KRCG-TV

  • The Helias Crusaders beat the Blair Oaks Falcons 9-5 at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex on Monday by scoring five runs in the sixth inning after trading hits in the first five innings (the decisive inning turned the tide).  Jefferson City News Tribune
