COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local Catholics in the diocese began a nine-day mourning period Monday after Pope Francis died at 88; bells will toll 88 times at churches and memorial services are scheduled, including Friday’s mass at the Cathedral of St. Joseph—church leaders urge reflection during this historic tradition.  ABC 17

CRIME NEWS

  • Mitchell Fox, 28, of Holts Summit was sentenced to 91 years in prison for multiple assaults and sexual violence offenses from a December 2022 investigation, the Callaway County Sheriff's Office said.  KRCG-TV
  • Mitchell Dean Fox III, 28, from Holts Summit was sentenced to 91 years in prison on Friday for multiple sex crimes including sodomy, rape and domestic assault—he also faces charges in Gasconade County for child molestation and in Callaway County with a hearing set for 8:30 a.m. on May 1.  ABC 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five international students at Mizzou had their visas terminated by the Department of Homeland Security on April 21 and the university provided academic support as they sought legal advice; one student at Central Methodist voluntarily left the country the day after her visa was cancelled and said she will return if she obtains a new visa.  KRCG-TV
  • During its meeting on Thursday in Jefferson City, the Lincoln University Board of Curators approved a 5% tuition increase for next school year while keeping mandatory fees the same and cutting summer session fees by 50%. The board also approved holiday schedules for upcoming fiscal years — the new schedules set dates for spring and winter breaks and key holidays.  ABC 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Severe storms on Sunday caused flooding in Cole County that led Cole County Public Works to close several roads on Monday. The road closures included the 11100 block of North Branch Road, the 5500 block of Loesch Road, the 5900 block of Bainer Road, the 3100 block of Zion Road, the 6100 block of Buffalo Road, the 1400 block of Waterford Road and the 2800 block of Meadowsford Road.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT announced that work will begin on the Highway 54 bridge in Jefferson City on May 5 with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction between Missouri Boulevard and Stadium Boulevard — crews will perform minor substructure repairs and apply a concrete overlay while restricting lanes to 11 feet and 35 mph — and incentives are offered to complete the repairs sooner than mid-October.  KRCG-TV
  • On Saturday, April 19, protesters gathered at the Capitol steps to oppose the state's new policies and call for ballot measures like an increase in the minimum wage and sick leave passed last November. We Stand United worked with Respect Missouri Voters to collect 300,000 signatures, and counter-protesters backed the state's plan to reconsider Amendment 3 before rain ended the peaceful demonstration.  KRCG-TV
