BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Book & Toy in Jefferson City announced Monday it will close its doors as rising costs and increased import tariffs forced a sale to an outside buyer — staff expect minimal disruption while details are finalized. Magazines and newspapers will be discontinued with the News Tribune ending delivery on April 19 and other papers on April 30 while special orders must be picked up by the end of April. KRCG-TV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Three correctional officers charged in the death of inmate Othel Moore will appear Monday at 9 a.m. in a Cole County courtroom before Judge Green for a plea/trial setting hearing—Moore died in December from suffocation at the Jefferson City Correctional Center after choking while restrained. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln University Cooperative Extension’s Innovative Small Farmers Outreach Program, led by Mary Keeter, offers hands-on training for Missouri farmers on low tunnel construction, drip irrigation, and grant-writing so they can protect crops and boost income. The program visits farms to provide tools and resources+ helping farmers adopt new methods that drive long-term growth. Lincoln University of Missouri
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Graphic design students at Nichols Career Center worked with muralist Adrienne Luther Johnson to create a mural that shows what the school offers. The artwork — made from team interviews and sketches — will be unveiled on April 17 at 5:30 p.m. and is expected to show the students' hard work. KRCG-TV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Conservation reported that from April 12 to 13 young hunters took 4,428 birds, with Osage County hunters taking 107 birds, Gasconade County hunters 105 and Texas County hunters 94. An official said excellent turkey weather and many two year old gobblers led to an 18% increase over last year and noted this second highest youth harvest since 2001 bodes well for the regular season starting April 21. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials announced that design changes are needed for the river market project along Chestnut Street at the old penitentiary site after the project was found to be over budget by more than $300,000. Neighborhood Services Supervisor Rachel Senzee said the project will receive cheaper flooring and smaller redactable doors while using demolished wall material for Chestnut Street improvements (the city owns the land though the state controls the penitentiary walls).
