ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on Highway 63 near the Boone-Callaway line Thursday night injured two senior citizens when a 2013 Nissan Quest (driven by a 65-year-old from Holts Summit) swerved to avoid another car at 5:33 p.m., overcorrected and went off the road down an embankment, leaving a 72-year-old passenger seriously hurt; both were taken to University Hospital and the lane was reopened around 7:30 p.m.  ABC 17

CRIME NEWS

  • Eldon police said Christy Hayes (51), who was missing since March and last seen March 25 at 4:30 p.m., has been located alive and well and her family has been notified.  KRCG-TV
  • A Jefferson City man, James Houston, was pulled over on March 15 for driving with a revoked license and admitted his status, and he now faces felony charges that could send him to up to four years in prison after three earlier violations, with his court appearance set for April 22.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cut all staff from LIHEAP, a program that helps 100,839 Missourians pay their energy bills, but the Missouri Department of Social Services said no service cuts are expected (10% of last year’s $8.1 million budget went to cover costs for fiscal year 2025). Health experts warn that with summer coming, access to cooling will be critical and the Missouri River Regional Library in Jefferson City will serve as a cooling center (providing a safe place for those at risk from the heat).  KRCG-TV
  • On Thursday, the Missouri House of Representatives in Jefferson City passed a $47.9 billion state budget that includes $8 billion for K-12 education and a $200 million increase over last year. State senators will soon debate the budget, which also sets aside $50 million for the MO Scholars program and adds funds for higher education and law enforcement training.  ABC 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan board named John Wiemann as its new executive director, and he will start on May 19. He is a lifelong Missourian who served in the state House and led an insurance group — he will work to keep a strong health care plan for over 100,000 members.  The Missouri Times
