CRIME NEWS

  • Officers responded on November 23, 2024, to a shooting on the 4800 block of Clark Lane where two men were injured, and on April 1 prosecutors charged teen Jamez Trevon Thompson-Bey with two counts of Armed Criminal Action, two counts of First Degree Assault, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and First Degree Robbery—issuing a no-bond warrant.  KRCG-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln University of Missouri will celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month in April by hosting weekly events including a campus initiative on April 3, a student roundtable on April 10, a self-care station on April 16, a mindfulness meditation on April 23, and Denim Day on April 30. Local businesses West Main Pizza, Scooter’s Coffee, and Central Dairy have supported the effort — which aims to reduce stigma and boost mental well-being as the academic year nears its end — to encourage broad campus participation.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • Lincoln University is making swift progress on its new Health and Security Science facility as contractor McCown Gordon Construction began pouring concrete Tuesday and the building, which broke ground in October 2024, will expand its nursing, STEM, and pre-med programs — and serve as a training center for law enforcement and emergency services. Governor Mike Parson approved a $40 million state contribution toward the $45.4 million project, and the facility is expected to open in August.  KRCG-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is hosting a Bradford Pear Tree Buyback Event that offers property owners a free native tree in exchange for cutting down an invasive Bradford Pear tree—registration is online from March 17 through April 17 and the event is set for Earth Day, April 22 in communities including Jefferson City.  KRCG-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Josh Stockman from the Cole County Sheriff's Office took his new role as Missouri Crisis Intervention Team Coordinator on April 1 and will update the training curriculum statewide—he manages day-to-day operations to support officers when they meet people in mental health crises.  KRCG-TV
  • Activists from Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action gathered at the Missouri Capitol Tuesday to call for stronger gun safety and to urge lawmakers to oppose House Bill 1175, which would revive the state law that hampered local enforcement of federal gun rules. The groups, part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s network, organized Advocacy Day amid recent shifts in state control of law enforcement.  ABC 17
