COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 100 locals gathered on Feb. 1 at Last Flight Brewing Company to sample homemade chili at the second annual Samaritan Center Chili Bean-anza fundraiser. Attendees donated nonperishable foods or money to support the Samaritan Center.  Jefferson City News Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • High Score Hideaway is open near downtown as an arcade-themed rental offering gaming and overnight stays. The 4,500 sqft venue features themed bedrooms and a board game room for both kids and adults.  Jefferson City News Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lincoln University celebrates Black History Month and its 160th anniversary with events at the Pawley Theatre (812 E. Dunklin St.) on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 25 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The events honor its founding by members of the 62nd and 65th U.S. Colored Troops.  Lincoln University of Missouri
  • The Missouri State Museum unveiled its new ornithology exhibit on Saturday afternoon in the renovated west wing, replacing gray tones with vibrant green hues and setting the stage for future projects.  Jefferson City News Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In December, Missourians wagered over $543 million on sports betting, but after $125 million in promotional deductions, the state netted only $521,200 for compulsive gaming and education. The Missouri Gaming Commission said the promotional phase is normal for a new market (as noted in its report).  Jefferson City News Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven candidates running for three open board seats highlighted challenges with staffing, budgeting and mental health faced by the school district. Human resources manager Gretchen (Raylene) Duckworth and others are emphasizing solid support for teachers and practical solutions for these issues.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Christina Bonsall teaches elementary school music and directs rehearsals at Capital City Productions while offering extra voice lessons and a new teen theater camp (Spotz on the Teen Artists) in Jefferson City.  Jefferson City News Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Landmark Recovery (non-profit) explained its program supporting people overcoming addiction to lawmakers last Tuesday during a House Veterans and Armed Services Committee meeting in Jefferson City.  Jefferson City News Tribune
  • Cole County first responders practiced their winter weather emergency procedures Monday morning during an ice rescue training led by the Jefferson City Fire Department (JCFD), Missouri State Highway Patrol and Cole County EMS. A similar drill was held Friday at Lake Mykee.  KRCG-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • KRCG will debut its new monthly Focus on Your Pets and Vets series in February, offering pet owners veterinary insight and guidance in collaboration with the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine + Dr. John Dodam and Dr. Pam Adkins explained the series on KRCG 13 Live at Sunrise.  KRCG-TV
